Five Reiki Principles for a Fulfilled Life

Reiki is a powerful holistic healing practice for optimal health, personal growth and transformation.

The founder of Reiki, Dr. Mikao Usui, laid down five principles as a guideline for a fulfilled life. The original teachings were adopted from the Meji Emperor of Japan (1868 – 1912).
These principles get taught to everyone taking a Reiki I course. You may or may not be familiar with Reiki. In my opinion these guidelines are similar to the ancient tradition teachings of many cultures and would can easily be applied to our every day lives.

May the principles inspire and encourage you to live a fulfilled life!

1. Don’t get angry today
Become aware of your emotions. When anger arises, take a few breaths, and see if you can calm yourself down. Anger hurts yourself and others, so try not to identify with your emotions, but find a way to bring balance and harmony to your day.

2. Don’t worry today.
We cannot change anything with worry. Worry arises when we are afraid of change, the loss of control, competition, and when we see ourselves as separate from the universe. Instead of worry, take action if you can change a situation. Hold on to your fellow travelers, support each other; we are all on the same journey.

3. Be grateful today.
There are so many blessings in your life. When you wake up in the morning, what are you grateful for? When you go to bed at night, what are you grateful for? Many may express their gratitude in seva (or selfless service), prayers, journaling, chanting, etc.
Gratitude also depends on our perception. Not everything that we label as good may continue to be so, and the same goes for the opposite. Trust, that the universe has your back. Connect to unconditional love and share your loving blessings with others.

4. Work hard today.
Work on learning and growing more every day. Devote some time every day to your spiritual practice. Keeping a regular schedule can be hard work, but know that it is worth it.

5. Be kind to others today.
Being kind starts with you. Invest in your own self-care, notice the thoughts, words and actions toward yourself. Practice to be kinder to yourself and others. Be aware of the thoughts, actions, words and deeds toward others. Be loving, kind and compassionate to all beings.
